About

We are Ann and Michael Sims and we have been selling books by catalogue from our base in Lowestoft for over 30 years. We have had a book selling website on internet since 1996.

Ann was born in Lowestoft but her paternal roots are in Co. Cork. I was born in Newbury, Berkshire but both of us have family connections locally and have spent most of our childhood and adult life in Lowestoft. I was a career fireman but had to take early retirement in 1983 after developing health problems.

At the time we already had an eight bedroomed guest house (Rockville House) which we further developed and we also sold books, both to our guests and by catalogue. As time went by the books began to take over more of the bedrooms and we put the book business on a more formal footing in 1994. We stopped taking guests and became full time booksellers in 1998 and with the growth of the internet we discontinued selling by printed catalogue to concentrate on our website catalogues.

We always carry a reasonable level of stock in Military and Naval History (mainly World War II), in Local (to northeast Suffolk) History and Topography, and in a number of early 20th century popular authors of Fiction. We also have a fluctuating stock in a number of smaller interest areas. Total stock (including uncatalogued stock) is in the region of 10,000 books.

The ABfaR Blog - the Lowestoft Cuckoo

The latest contribution on the ABfaR blog is an account of an air raid on Lowestoft on 1st February 1942 in which a mother and two of her children were killed. Their deaths led to the installation of an 'immediate danger' air raid warning which sounded like the call of a cuckoo. That alert subsequently sounded 628 times before the end of the war saving countless other lives.

Lowestoft Ephemera

I maintain another site called Old Lowestoft. It is a collection point for various ephemeral items of local historical interest. Buried within that site is Letters from Lowestoft, a collection of letters of local Lowestoft war news written during WW2.

For information about the 1916 German bombardment of Lowestoft during WW1 you can find the full text of my family's account of the bombardment on the 'Old Lowestoft' site.

Latest stock additions

Sad to say I haven't added any new stock since November 2014 when my oldest relative went into hospital. It was found when he was ready to be discharged that he was no longer capable of looking after himself and he has gone into residential care.

This has necessitated the disposal of his home but before that can be achieved the contents have to be sorted and carefully examined, especialIy as there are several paper securities that have not been traced.

I have managed to add a couple of posts to my blog but little else. I have continued buying interesting stock when it has been offered including a couple of Georgette Heyer collections and I hope to find the time to catalogue it later this year.

In the meantime please watch this space!
